World Cup 2014

World Cup fever has gained a lot of momentum sinceĀ the Dutch team won last Friday. The World Cup 2014 also known as WK is hosted in Brazil this year, and Spain was the first opposing team that the Netherlands faced. Everyone was rushing to get home or to the nearest bar to watch the game, and naturally my Dutchie watched the game. The Dutch team won 5-1 and it was an astonishing win, given Spain’s reputation and previous track record. Now… my father was an avid soccer fan and I’ve watched games before but it is nothing like this. My neighbors were blowing horns for every goal and let’s say it was a very noisy night…

The Dutch team’s next match is on Wednesday and people are super excited for it. I think World Cup fever can only be described as Queen’s Day but for a longer period of time. Orange is everywhere and even houses are decorated with support for the Dutch team (I am no exception! I have tiny hamster soccer players from AH taped to my door). I’m excited to see how the match against Australia plays out and if they win, this fever is going to rise even more!

Here are someĀ fun things I’ve learned about the World Cup:

  • Several shops had offered discounts based on the # of goals the Dutch team would score on their first match. One shoe shop offered a 10 euro discount for every goal, let’s say that they are now completely sold out of shoes…
  • The coach for the Dutch team had chosen to use a different game play of 5-3-2 versus the traditional 4-3-3 and received a lot of criticism for his decision. Up until right before the game people were still complaining about his decision, and now that the team has won, they are hailing him a genius…
